Dumping Syndrome

Definition: Also known as rapid gastric emptying, this occurs when undigested food from the stomach fills the lower intestine too quickly after eating. Early dumping can cause nausea, vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, and shortness of breath. "Late" dumping which occurs 1 - 3 hours after eating is characterized by sweating and dizziness. The main cause of dumping syndrome is stomach surgery which may cause damage to the digestive controls. Dumping syndrome is controlled by eating smaller frequent meals and limiting intake of carbohydrates and sugars.

Examples: The patient experienced dumping syndrome with nausea and diarrhea after haveing a portion of his stomach removed for cancer treatment.
