Generic Name: Heparin Calcium
FDA Drug Classification: Anticoagulant
Action: Increases the production of antithrombin (blood products that prevent blood from clotting) and prevents trombin from working. Thrombin is a blood component that causes clotting.
Adverse Effects:
  • Hemorrhage
  • Prolonged clotting time.
Precautions: Should not be used by:
  • People with active bleeding.
  • People with bleeding disorders such as hemophilia.
  • Pregnant women with threatened abortion.
Interactions: Use of heparin with other anticoagulent drugs may increase the anticoagulent effect to dangerous levels. Use with caution with salicylates (aspirin) that have an antiplatelet effect.
