Question - I have an irregular heartbeat - what can I expect? :

I have just had an echocardiogram which shows a number of extra beats. I'm due to have a treadmill test tomorrow. I first saw my doctor because of a few incidents of strong palpitations and had a 24hour ecg which showed a few irregular beats. What is the best and the worst I can expect? I am 66, otherwise feel very fit. walk my dog 3-4 miles a day and lead a fairly active life but I am worried. I have never been hospitalised. I have have had asthma since I was 11 but it scarcely bothers me now. It is controlled by a minimum of medication . I am not due to see the specialist for about 3 weeks so would appreciate an opinion.

Guide Responds:

Treatment for irregular heart beats can range from no treatment to medication to surgery. Once your doctor has diagnosed the cause and type irregularity then treatment if needed will be decided upon. The links below will give you information about these disorders and treatments

You'll also find it helpful to talk with others who may have similar experiences or problems. The best places to do that are our Forums and Chatroom.
