Question - Can I find information regarding post hip replacement operations?:

In June of last year, I had a total hip takedown with a replacement done. I got infected twice over and had 2 more operations done to clean out the infection. Since my last operation I have been doing physio therapy and have been left with a shortness in my right side. I have been told from 1/2 inch to 3 inch short on the right side. I am in a worse off state of affairs as far as walking goes than what i was originally. I told the surgeon that I walk like a PENGUIN from side to side and up and down. Could you or do you know where or what i could do or see in regards to this situation????????

I haved talked to the surgeon about this and he said that because my right hip is higher than the left one (hip hiking) it will take time to allow my right hip to come down. As far as the shortness in my leg, he could not answer me directly as to why. Don't get me wrong about the doctor, he is a good man but i expressed to him that this is not right.

> I looked on the internet but the info just goes on and on and on and on just like the everyready bunny.

Guide Responds:I would not presume to second guess your doctor, but if you feel something is wrong you are doing the right thing in trying to check it out. I do have some information on hip replacement (see below).

Though complications are not common, they can happen and include:

  • difference in leg length
  • stiffness
  • dislocation of hip (ball pops out of socket)
  • infection in hip

A few of the complications, such as infection or dislocation, may require reoperation. Infected artificial hips sometimes have to be removed.

Hope this helps some. You should never be afraid to have a second opinion.

You'll also find it helpful to talk with others who may have similar experiences or problems. The best place to do that is our Forums.
