Question - Where can we get help in getting health insurance for Dad?:

My father is 60 yrs old with very little income and no health insurance. Over the years he has paid taxes and medicaid, how can he get financial help for doctor visits, exams, treatment for diabetic health issues and prescription drugs.

Guide Responds:

Lack of insurance, especially when one is a diabetic is a very serious problem. Keeping diabetes under control is the way to prevent further complications.
The possible options are:
  • Contact your state office of Health and Human Services to begin the application process for Medicaid. He may qualify under income and becaus of high medical needs. Ask to have a case worker assigned to your father. You can find a contact in the links below, to the State Agencies on aging that will help lead you in the right direction.
  • Contact Social Security. Check to see if your father qualify for SSI disability benefits. Should he qualify he will also qualify for Medicare.
  • Contact your local diabetes association ans request information on any assistance they can provide for help with physicians care and medications.

Keep these points in mind:

  • There is no magic bullet. It will probably take some time and perseverance. Government assistance programs vary from state to state and sometimes county to county. Income qualifications vary just as much. Some states are just more consumer friendly.
  • Be persistant
  • Keep records of who you talked to and what they said
  • Make sure your father's financial records are in good order

I hope this helps. You might also want to contact your congressional representative and voice your concerns about the lack of a safety net for the uninsured.

You'll also find it helpful to talk with others who may have similar experiences or problems. The best places to do that are Senior Health Forums and Chatroom.
