Brand Name - Evista®

Generic Name - raloxifene hydrochloride

FDA Drug Classification - Selective estrogen receptor modulator

Action - Reduces reabsorption of bone and bone "turnover" which leads to bone loss known as osteoporosis

Adverse Effects -

  • Hot flashes
  • Weight gain
  • Edema or swelling

Precautions - Should not be used by:

  • Use with caution in women with circulatory disorders as it may increase risk of blood clots
  • Use with caution in women experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding.

Interactions -

  • Should not be used with Cholestyramine as it affects it's absorption.
  • Monitor protrombin time if given to a patient on warfarin (coumadin)
