National Colorectal Awareness Month

The risk of developing colon - rectal cancer increases with age, as does the occurrence of most cancers. The good news is, colorectal cancer is a slow growing cancer and if detected early is very treatable. Why then are the rates of seniors being tested for this cancer so low? In 1999 only 14 % of Americans over the age of 65 received testing for colon cancer. This is despite the fact that these tests are covered by Medicare. With early detection there is a 90% survival rate.

This first annual observation of colorectal cancer was initiated to bring attention to the fact that detection is easy and inexpensive and that very effective treatment is available. Many people may avoid seeking these tests due to what they feel are embarrassing testing procedures. NBC's Today Show host Katie Couric who lost her husband to colorectal cancer is the spokesperson for this campaign. She underwent a colonoscopy with a camera crew filming the procedure. The goal is to highlight the ease of these tests and overcome the taboos society has placed on the open discussion of these important health issues. Be sure to discuss these tests with your doctor during your annual checkup and insist that they be done.

Screening Tests

  • Fecal Occult Blood Test
This simple test is done by a simple digital rectal exam and can give an almost immediate indication of any blood in the stool.
  • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
This test would be done every 4 years unless a person is at high risk, then would be done every 2 years. It is painless and can be done in the office without any sedation. This exam looks at the rectum and lower 2 feet of the bowel.
  • Barium Enema
This is an x-ray procedure and is done in an outpatient hospital or outpatient imaging center. A barium enema, followed by air is introduced into the rectum. Barium provides contrast for the x-rays. The x-rays can detect any abnormal outlines in the bowel.
  • Colonosopy
Colonoscopy is similar to the sigmoidoscopy but it gives a more complete picture of the entire colon. A biopsy can be done at the same time. It is somewhat uncomfortable and sedation is generally given.
