It's hard to believe, the baby boomer generation is getting old. In the next few years the majority of them will be eligible for membership in AARP.

Besides looking forward to retirement, I have found myself looking at ways to have a healthy retirement. What good will the free time do me if I am not healthy enough to enjoy myself?

The priority for seniors trying to improve or maintain their health should be a healthy diet and a fitness program. The old adage of nothing in excess, everything in moderation is especially true here. A well balanced diet with a variety of foods is what dietitians and nutritionists recommend for optimum health. Special diets prescribed for those seniors with diabetes or high blood pressure can be interesting, satisfying and healthy too.

Mildred and Earl Rodgers are 88 and 90 years old respectfully, and are living proof that changing your health habits even in middle age can help to ensure your senior years are healthier. It is never too late to start. In one survey of senior athletes, most (71%) had started a fitness program after the age of 50.

My hope is that by learning to improve our health we can focus on enjoying our senior years. Can eating a healthy diet mean you will spend more time traveling the country in your RV than being shut up in a nursing home? I won't make any guarantees, but chances are it will make a big difference.
