Flu Season Approaching

In some parts of the world the frost is on the pumpkin, and snow is in the air. There is also danger in the air in the form of the flu virus. Experts predict this could be an especially bad year for the flu. What can you do to protect yourself?

The most important thing you can do to protect yourself this year is to get a flu shot. Health experts are now advising that all adults over 50 should receive a flu shot. Flu shots are available from you health care provider, or at special clinics being held this time of year. If you have a chronic illness, or allergy check with your doctor for recommendations. Remember, Medicare covers the Flu Shot.

The flu shot does not guarantee 100% protection from coming down with the flu. A few changes in your lifestyle may help to increase your resistance, or the severity of the flu.

  1. Eat better. Fresh fruits and vegetables are readily available all year long. Leafy green vegetables and citrus fruits are especially important in boosting the immune system.
  2. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Even a mild temperature elevation can cause dehydration.
  3. Exercise caution in situations with large crowds, stay away from people who are sick.
  4. Many people swear by the herbal preparation Echinacea. Proponents claim it helps to boost the immune system.
  5. Avoid stressful situations. Stress can decrease your immune response.
  6. If the flu lingers too long, or you have shortness of breath contact your doctor. Most flu deaths are actually caused by pneumonia.
