Brand Name: Fosamax
Generic Name: alendonate
FDA Drug Classification: Bone-resorption inhibitor
Action: Absorbs calcium phosphate crystal in bone; inhibits bone resorption.

Used in treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men; prevention of osteoporosis. Also used in treatment of Pagets disease and corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis.

Adverse Effects: Side effects that may occur include:
  • headache
  • abdominal pain, anorexia, constipation, nausea, vomiting, esophageal ulceration
  • bone pain
  • hypertension
  • UTI, fluid overload
Precautions: Should be used with caution in children, pregnant women or those who are breastfeeding. Also use with caution in persons with esophageal disease, ulcers or gastritis.
Possible Interactions:
  • antiacids and calcium supplements may decrease absorption of this medication
  • use with NSAIDs and salycilates (aspirin) could increase gastrointestinal side effects
  • caffine and orange juice may decrease absorption of the medication
