Brand Name: Norvasc
Generic Name: Amlodipine (am-loe'di-peen)
FDA Drug Classification: Antianginal, antihypertnsive, calcium channel blocker
Action: Inhibits calcium ion influx across cell membrane during cardiac depolarization; relaxation of coronary vascular smooth muscle; dilates coronary vascular arteries. Used to treat angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure).
Adverse Effects:
  • Heart rhythm changes, edema (swelling), low heart rate, low blood pressure, palpitations, fainting
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gastric upset, constipation, abdominal cramps, flatulence, anorexia, gingival hyperplasia
  • increase urine output
  • rash, itching, hair loss
  • headache, fatigue, dizziness, anxiety, depression, insomnia
Precautions: Not advised for use when patient has sick sinus syndrome, 2nd or 3rd degree heart block or blood pressure less than 90mmHg systolic. Use with care in patients who have congestive heart failure, low blood pressure, hepatic (liver) damage, pregnancy or breast feeding, renal disease and the elderly.
