Choosing a Qualified Dealer to Modify the Vehicle

Modifications and adaptations to vehicles need to be done correctly by experts in the field. If not done correctly modifications can affect the safe operation of the vehicle an may result in injury or death.

Talk with your evaluator or rehabilitation center for modifications dealers in your area. Talk with them and find out about credentials and experience. Ask for references and talk with other customers about their experiences with the dealer.

You may want to ask the following questions:[u]

  • Do they work with evaluators?
  • Will they look at your vehicle before you purchase it?
  • Do they require a prescription from a physician or other driver evaluation specialist?
  • How long will it take before they can start work on your vehicle?
  • Do they provide training on how to use the adaptive equipment?

You can also ask if they are members of the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) or another organization that has vehicle conversion standards. This organization will also be able to direct you to member dealers in your area.

Don't forget to find out the final costs and find out if they work with third-party payors (insurance companies) for payment.
